May 20, 2016 - Day Trip to Cape May, NJ |
||||||
Lynnette and I -- well, mostly me -- had wanted to fly down to this weekend's AOPA fly-in in Beaufort, South Carolina but bad weather nixed that. Lynnette suggested a day trip to nearby Cape May, New Jersey where the weather was good. So that's what we did. It was a short 45 minute flight to get there. Here we are crossing the Delaware Bays with Cape Henlopen visible in the distance.
Land ho! Cape May dead ahead.
|
||||||
Approaching Cape May Airport (KWWD) which has a very helpful and friendly FBO and well as an on-field restaurant. There is also a museum featuring U.S. Naval Aviation as this airport was a Navy dive bomber training base during WWII.
The airport is much too far from the beach area to walk so we caught a cab. A half hour after landing here we are on the beach walkway with the brightly colored vacation rental places in the background.

||||||
The town of Cape May is small enough to see by foot. This is main street with a bunch of restaurants, bars and stores.
And of course there is the beach.
After five hours or so in Cape May, we caught a Uber back to the airport, fueled, and mounted up. While we were getting the plane ready, a couple arrived at the airport, walked up to that jet, climbed in, lit the fires and took off! Nice.
Checking out Cape May as we departed.

A little closer look at the town. Hanging out at Cape May is not a bad way to spend the day.
